about

For Éamonn Ó Faogáin.
Laoch, cara croí, Gael, ceoltóir, cumadóir, amhránaí, agus duine den céad scoth.
All of these melodies were written for Éamonn before he died, either for him to sing, or as a present, or for him to listen to. They are: Suaimhneas, An Dearcadh, and An Fhuiseog Eolach. The first two are reflections
on Éamonn’s unique character and outlook on life. The last is a melody setting for a poem he was to sing.
The sound recordings are an excerpt from the soundscape I made for Owenvarragh, a Belfast Circus on The Star Factory, a new realization of John Cage’s 1979 “Circus On” score. Éamonn was our singer, and he performed in the piece three times, first in March 2012 at the Sonic Arts Research Centre as part of Sonorities Festival of Contemporary Music, and subsequently in York and Belfast. Owenvarragh is a whole other story. You can read about it and the collaborators on my website.
This excerpt contains some of my personal favourites from hundreds of recordings: the kettle’s whistle, the newspaper seller, brilliant west Belfast kids... but most of all, the ships in Belfast Loch, sounding their horns at midnight on New Year’s Eve 2011, with the fireworks.
