about

JACK TALTY
concertina, tape

A piece as a response to the Folk-rnn collection. Folk-rnn is an artificial intelligence developed by Prof Bob Sturm and Dr Oded Ben-Tal. It is a recurring neural network trained on over 23,000 pieces listed on thesession.org. Having learned from this collection, it has generated over 100,000 tunes. Three of these are presented here.

The title is because I was struck by the sense of unease felt by some musicians when I described the work of the folk-rnn team and system. The tunes from the folk-rnn collection are all numbered, and I used the house numbers of places in Belfast I had lived during my life, as a starting point to select particular tunes. For example, 55 (Delhi Street); 34 (Malone Avenue). The melodies played here on concertina are composed by the computer, having learned from collections of notated traditional music. The tape piece played here by computer, is composed by me from recordings of my playing as I learned the computer’s compositions. We each play the other’s work, and the work is made from the process we each went through, of learning the other’s material.

In the case of both the computer and the musician, tunes can be generated after a period of learning from an established collection.
