about

PAULINE SCANLON
voice, harp, tape, live electronics

The first section is my setting of the poem 'Weather Vane' by Maureen Boyle. The events are very recent; a result of attitudes that are still painfully slow to change. The second part of the piece calls for lines from the repertoire of the performer, a response to the theme. She must improvise between statements, the live capturing and processing of voices, and her own song.

Thanks to Maureen Boyle for permission to use her poem as song lyrics, and to Meadhbha Monaghan for recordings of uilleann pipes used in the tape part.

The live version of this piece, originally written in 2017, is performed with additional sections. It explores wider themes of gender balance in Irish traditional music, imagining the notes of a tune as voices, and what we might hear when those voices aren’t equally represented. For more information on the research that followed, see my article in Ethnomusicology Ireland “121 Stories: The Impact of Gender on Participation in Irish Traditional Music” (2021).
